Supercilious

adj: behaving or looking as though one thinks one is superior to others.
arrogant, haughty, pompous, condescending
superciliousness: n
superciliously: adv

I repeat: this exclusive blog manifests Tim and Meredith's supercilious side.
Pharisees pray their supercilious prayers, while humble sinners plead for mercy.
Tim superciliously writes brief cryptic pleonast posts.

i wouldn't have posted this word if you defined it properly yesterday.  i thought i knew what it meant too, but i didn't.  now we do :)

  1. so, supercilious is not to be confused with frivolous or silly or superficial. i'm so glad you cleared up this common misconception.

Nabal's supercilious nature caused God to kill him.
Meredith maintains a supercilious opinions regarding her music, but she knows that attitude is frivolous.
Tim continues to hold a supercilious mind toward the i-love-ny-mini--it's exterior paint was quite ridiculous.

"supercilious" is also not to be confused with "cilia," the tiny microscopic hairs that move brown algae and other organisms.

  2. also not to be confused with "supersilly", short funny blonde girls i.e. meredith qualls.

i guess "supersilly" was too obvious. probably why you didn't make that comment, and why your comment was much funnier.

  3. We can be supercilious in our knowledge of the meaning of the word. Or we can be supersilly. I'm a fan of both.
