Desultory

do we still do this?

adj: lacking a plan, purpose, or enthusiasm;
in conversation, going halfheartedly from one subject to another in an unfocused way;
occurring randomly or occasionally

this word was taken from the simon & garfunkel song titled "A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd Into Submission)"

Meredith used to feel sad and desultory because she had no plans for her future. She still has few plans, but she no longer feels sad or desultory.
Meredith used to fear that Tim would hate her desultory conversation, so she wouldn't talk as much.
Tim's birthday plans for Meredith were not desultory in the least.
God has to be angry when my prayers seem desultory and selfish.
The Beach Boy's mention of the beach, girls, and cars in their songs is not desultory. Rather, it is evident in every song.

this word was tricky.

  1. Tim considers if Meredith's conversational habits are desultory or not. They are lacking any plan (unless if she prewrites them on a note card unbeknownst to me), they sometimes have a purpose (not excommunicating her family), but they definitely are enthusiastic. Regardless, Tim prefers Meredith's endless ramblings to anything else.
    I would have preferred if my prayers were desultory last week. In stead, they were nonexistent.
    I am not forgiving of desultory Bible teachers.
    Paul might seem desultory, but 4 hours of perusing his paragraphs reveal a strong purpose and aim.
    No, the Beach Boys aren't desultory, but some might argue their song topics are juvenile and shallow.
    I don't have a clue what Simon or Garfunkel are talking about, but I have a feeling they are not being desultory.
    This is a good word. Too bad I'll never remember it.
